How to leave.

Ever wondered when is the right time to leave a job?

So did we.

Scroll through any recruitment website and you’ll find a list of the tell tale signs to look out for.

You’re bored. You hate Mondays. You don’t like the culture. Or your colleagues. You never laugh out loud at work. You just don’t care about it any more.

But what if none of these are the case?

Go to the world of sport for inspiration and you’ll find the advice ‘leave at the top of your game’.

But how do you know when that is?

If you’re in a high performing culture everyone believes the best is yet to come, so it is almost impossible to know when you’ve reached the summit of success.

And anyway, in sport, the average age of retirement is 33. So, we’ve left it a bit late to follow their advice.

But having now made the decision to go, here’s what we now know.

There is no right time, just a time that feels right.

And it feels right when you know your successors are ready to fill your shoes and walk to places you never could.

For everyone still in role, it’s good to remind yourself that you are only ever borrowing the jersey. You want to do the very best you can while it’s yours and hope to be remembered for the time you had it on. But perhaps the most important thing is to create the right conditions for those who will wear it after you to thrive.

That after all is the ultimate definition of legacy.

Always be more excited about what’s next than what you might leave behind.

We are.
